The Liggett Players are pleased to present Big Fish as the Upper School’s musical production at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7-Saturday, March 9 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 10. Community members and the general public may purchase tickets here.

Seniors Olivia Johnson and Mark Saigh provide an exclusive, inside scoop on the production.

What is Big Fish about?
Olivia: Big Fish is a story of relationships we form throughout our lives that impact our decisions. It is a tale of familial love and hardship. Addressing topics of grief, fear, and love and how they’re all intertwined.
Mark: Big Fish is a story about the circle-of-life and family. The play explores the story of Edward Bloom's adventures from his younger years to his elderly state and follows his family as they traverse life with him. Edward's grand stories and the dynamic of the Bloom family will certainly keep the audience involved as they take a journey through this fantastical world!

What part do you have and tell us a little about your character?
Olivia: My character’s name is Sandra Bloom (formerly Templeton), she is Edward Bloom’s wife (played by Giovanni Thams) and the mother to William (Will) Bloom played by Ari Medvinsky. Sandra is the glue of the Bloom family, though quiet, she is a strong and inspiring woman from the time we see her in college to the older stage of her life that is present throughout the play.
Mark: I play the part of Amos Calloway, a circus owner with a shocking secret! He takes in Edward and enlists him to work in exchange for a grand reveal. Amos is witty, sarcastic, and certainly has a big personality!

Do you have a favorite scene or song?
Olivia: I would say my favorite scene is “How It Ends.” As a senior, it is definitely bittersweet.
Mark: My favorite number is definitely "Out There on the Road" as I think it perfectly captures the grandness of Edward's adventures and I enjoy that the whole town comes together to tell this essential part of the story. We've been working super hard on this scene and I think it will be one of the many show-stopping moments!

Describe Big Fish in three words.
Olivia: Family, fun, and life!
Mark: Emotional, theatric, and larger-than-life!

Big Fish is a rollicking fantasy set in the American South, and centers on the charismatic Edward Bloom, whose impossible stories of his life's epic adventures frustrate his son Will. Now, with Edward on his deathbed, Will must embark on his own journey to find out who his father really is, unraveling the man from the myth, the truth from the tall tales.
