Middle School House System
At University Liggett Middle School, we have adopted houses as a way to build community and promote positive multi-age and cross-grade level relationships. At the beginning of each school year, new middle school students are sorted into one of six houses. Each house is populated by a cross-section of students from all grade levels, teachers and an honorary senior administrator. Students remain a member of their House for the duration of their time in middle school.
House Activities
-
Ready, Set, Go
Through relays, games, and challenges such as the tricycle bike races Middle School students can earn house points toward the House Cup.
-
House Challenges
House challenges leverage the talents of everyone and include athletic contests, artistic pursuits, and academic games.
-
Community Service Projects
Community service is an integral part of community building. Through the Middle School House System we aim to build lasting relationships with the local community.
-
Penny Wars
During the week-long Penny Wars, the Houses compete by donating pennies to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
-
Gobblepalooza
Each year, students collect items to benefit Crossroads of Michigan. The winning house delivers the items, which allows the students to see the community they are impacting.
-
House Cup
Through challenges, competitions and service projects students earn house points. Each year, the House Cup is awarded to the house with the most points.
The House System provides opportunities for students, regardless of age, to lead and showcase their strengths through service projects, games, challenges, and friendly competitions.
Steeped in history
Named for the home streets of University Liggett School's predecessor schools - Briarcliff, Broadway, Burns, Cook, Parkview and Roosevelt - each house has a motto, a mascot, and a flag. This helps create a sense of spirit and belonging for each house.
House Council
A House Council, which was created in 2023, gives students an additional opportunity to gain leadership skills. The House Council guides and plans House activities for the year. The House Council, which has senior board positions and a representative from each house, is comprised of seventh and eighth grade students.
House Sorting
Right from the beginning, with the House Sorting Ceremony, students are welcomed into the community and the silos between grade levels and groups are broken down as students are welcomed into their Houses.
