University Liggett School joins local Independent Schools to host alumni networking event
On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, more than 85 alumni from four Detroit-area Independent Schools including University Liggett School, Roeper, Detroit Country Day School and Cranbrook attended our second annual Detroit Independent Schools Joint Alumni networking event at theTechTown Detroit.
This was the second event of its kind, and this year’s gathering was geared toward alumni either within or transitioning to the tech industry. We were lucky enough to hear a compelling and informative panel discussion courtesy of Nishant Dixit ‘03 (ULS), Phyllip Hall ‘84 (Cranbrook), Molly Borman ‘07 (Detroit Country Day School) and Morgan Andahazy ‘95 (Roeper).
Led by moderator Ian Perkins ‘05 (Cranbrook), this group spoke about their varied careers in tech and answered questions about industry trends, ethical concerns and the rise and emergence of technology based companies in the Metro Detroit area.
University Liggett School panelist Nishant Dixit ‘03, a fintech expert and start-up founder, explained to the group that “Detroit is now the world’s second fastest-growing startup ecosystem. Organizations like Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Plug and Play Detroit, Newlab, TechTown, and others are empowering people at every career stage — from middle school to retirement — to thrive in tech and startups.”
He also reflected about the importance of his education by adding that “independent schools have given us the critical thinking and leadership skills to make our dreams a reality. I’m proud to be from Detroit and to start up here.”
After the panel discussion concluded, alumni guests from the four schools stayed to mix, mingle and network with each other. It was a fantastic, collaborative evening and additional Detroit Independent School Alumni networking events will be planned. This invaluable alumni programming is a collaboration between the leading independent schools in the Detroit area and the inaugural event, focused on the medical industry, was hosted in February 2024 at the Detroit Athletic Club.
