University Liggett School announces Kyle Alan Denham Memorial Scholarship recipient

University Liggett School is proud to announce that the 2020-21 recipient of the Kyle Alan Denham Memorial Scholarship is John Francis ‘24 of Grosse Pointe Woods.

“John is exceptionally strong academically,” said Stephanie Sikora, director of enrollment management. “He is a collaborative and energetic leader in the classroom and on the athletic fields.”
Prior to attending ULS, Francis attended Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Woods. Francis has been involved in musical theater and plays travel soccer. He is currently a member of the boys’ soccer team and he plans to run track and field in the spring.

The Kyle Alan Denham Memorial Scholarship was created to honor Kyle Denham, a 1998 ULS graduate. The scholarship was created by his sister Erica Denham ‘95 and mother Linda Denham, along with their non-profit organization, Inspired by Thee.

“In June of 2006, my brother Kyle, who was my best friend and only sibling, passed away in a car accident,” said Erica. “It was as if someone had turned out the light in my life. I thought I would never smile again, but I was wrong. Over time, I have come to realize that Kyle is still with me, and each day I am encouraged to reach higher, push harder and accomplish more.”

“We’re honored that the Denham family chose to honor Kyle’s memory with a scholarship that helps students attend our Upper School,” said Cressie Boggs, director of development and alumni relations. “We’re excited to reestablish this scholarship to commemorate Kyle’s vibrant life and many contributions.”

The Kyle Alan Denham Memorial Scholarship, originally founded in 2006, is awarded to one 9th grade student each year, who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, strength of character, and leadership potential. Recipients will receive scholarship money for each of the four years of Upper School at ULS.
