Liggett Merit Scholarship applications accepted for 9th grade students until January 17, 2020

University Liggett School is accepting applications for the Liggett Merit Scholarship, a highly selective, merit-based scholarship for grades nine through 12. Eighth-graders who are interested in attending University Liggett School next year on a scholarship must submit application materials by January 17, 2020.

Each year, the Liggett Merit Scholars program grants full-tuition and partial-tuition awards to incoming ninth-graders. Since its inception in 2008, University Liggett School has provided merit-based scholarships to more than 50 students.

“This highly selective scholarship seeks to attract students who have exceptional academic strength and promise, as well as a diversity of interests,” said Stephanie Sikora, Director of Enrollment Management. “These are students who can make the strongest impact on the University Liggett School community.”

University Liggett School’s 2019-20 Liggett Merit scholarship recipients are:

Brooke Summers of Grosse Pointe Woods. Brooke came to University Liggett School from St. Joan of Arc in the fifth grade. Since coming to Liggett, Brooke has developed a love for math, which was her least favorite subject prior to transferring to Liggett. She said the teachers at Liggett made math much for fun and interesting for her to learn. Brooke has taken full advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities at Liggett, becoming a starter as a freshman on the varsity field hockey team. She plans to play soccer in the spring. She is the daughter of Paul and Sue Summers.

Langston Evans of Detroit. Langston came to University Liggett Scho ol from St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic School in Grosse Pointe Park. His favorite subject is science and he enjoys playing soccer, baseball and tennis. He is the youngest of four with three older sisters. Langston, who said he’s never had a pet, wants to be a veterinarian when he grows up. A creative spirit, Langston said he hopes to contribute to the community of achievers through hard work and perseverance. He is the son of Larry and Aprial Evans.

Olivia Thomas of Grosse Pointe. Olivia joins University Liggett School from Pierce Middle School. Olivia said from the moment she walked into Liggett she knew it was the school for her. “All the students always had smiles on their faces wherever you went and there was such a positive environment,” Olivia said she is excited to be a part of such a strong community. “Liggett’s strong sense of community shines through the students.” Olivia’s favorite subjects are English and Spanish, and she enjoys playing soccer and writing short stories. She hopes to attend Stanford College to study pre-med and dermatology. She is the daughter of Terence and LaShanda Thomas.
