Craig White takes the court as girls’ varsity basketball coach

University Liggett School has hired Craig White as the girls’ varsity basketball coach. White previously held the position of Director of Basketball Skill Development at University Liggett School, where he assisted with the boys’ and girls’ middle and upper school basketball programs.

White has more than 15 years of experience coaching at the high school varsity level and played professional basketball for 12 years in the South American Basketball League.

“I believe in empowering youth through basketball,” White said. “University Liggett School is known for shaping students through athletics. I believe athletics is an extension of the classroom. As a coach, I am given the opportunity to help student-athletes develop self-discipline, sacrifice, respect, cooperation, loyalty and pride in teamwork and I look forward to my new role and empowering youth through basketball at ULS.”

White said his experience as a professional player in South America is an asset for him as a coach and gives him a unique perspective. While in Argentia, White held basketball camps for children of all ages, while becoming bilingual in Spanish.

“Running those camps taught me to be open-minded, patient and precise,” he said.

Previously, White served as the high school basketball coach at Harper Woods High School — a position he held for almost 20 years — and since 2010 was the head girls’ basketball coach at Brownell Middle School in Grosse Pointe Farms.

“Craig Is a great addition to our coaching staff. He brought a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight to our teams in his previous position as director of basketball skill development and I’m eager to see him in action as our girls’ varsity basketball coach,” said Athletic Director Alan Parish.
