SCEBC Hosts Upper School Core Values Kite Decorating Contest

The Chinese proverb, “a kite rises on the wind,” suggests that individuals, represented by the kite, rise and succeed with the help of the ”wind” of their supporters. To honor Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and the rich kite flying traditions in AAPI communities, and to remind ourselves of Liggett’s Core Values, the Upper School Student Community Engagement and Belonging Council (SCEBC) organized the Advisory Core Values Kite Decoration Contest.

Throughout the week, advisors recounted heartwarming stories of students who showed empathy for peers. The Hemler advisory discussed the meaning of integrity in considering their kite design. Members of the Karolak advisory demonstrated respect for each other by drawing attention to the core value each student embodied the most.

Students from the Bianchi-Hemler/Minwalla advisory chose “Excellence” as their theme because they felt that their advisors always held them to a higher standard. Most importantly, students had a chance to reflect on what it means to be a part of the Liggett community. The Kost-Cox/Walker advisory connected the underwater world of the book Rainbow Fish to their understanding of community in their kite design.
