The University Liggett School alumni website is your place to connect with classmates, learn about what's happening at school and in our community, and support the University Liggett School experience for current and future students.

Alumni Facts & Figures

  • University Liggett School is the oldest independent school in Michigan
  • We are comprised of four predecessor schools:
    • The Liggett School, founded in 1878
    • Detroit University School, founded in 1899
    • Grosse Pointe Country Day School, founded in 1915
    • Grosse Pointe University School, founded in 1954
  • We have almost 4,600 active alumni in more than 21 countries around the world
  • With more than 175 Knights in the state, New York has the highest number of alumni outside of Michigan
  • Our alumni have won Pulitzer Prizes, Tony and Emmy Awards, and have medaled in the Olympics
  • ULS graduates have won Fulbright and Rhodes Scholarships
  • We currently have 17 faculty/staff emeritus
  • Longest-serving teacher? Francis J McCann (47 years)
  • Alumni are the largest donors to the Annual Fund
  • We are called the Knights because DUS was once housed in a building known as “The Castle”

COVID-19 disrupts upcoming alumni events

As alumni, you are an important part of the University Liggett School community and we will continue to keep you as informed as possible as events here on Cook Road get altered and/or cancelled due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. The situation is changing by the day, indeed by the hour at times. Here is what we are doing right now to protect the health of our student population and our broader community:

Unfortunately, these alumni events are cancelled:

  • The Washington, DC Alumni & Friends reception on April 14
  • The Parents of Alumni Reception on April 16
  • JT Mestdagh ’14 Speaking at Community Time on April 24
  • The Alumni/Student Volunteer event at Keep Growing Detroit on April 25

These alumni events are still happening until further notice:

  • Arts Hall of Fame event honoring Leonard Sullivan ’97 on May 7
  • Ring and Founders Day Ceremony (for current upper school students/families), featuring alumni speaker Joanna Miller ‘04 on May 8
  • 2020 Alumni Weekend May 15 & 16 (if this event gets cancelled, all registration payments will be refunded)

We plan to keep you apprised, via email, in the next few weeks as we announce updates and roll out more cancellations as needed. Thank you for your flexibility during this extraordinary and unprecedented time.

Become a Liggett Merit Scholar for the 2020-21 school year – Apply Today!

University Liggett School is accepting applications for the Liggett Merit Scholarship, a highly selective, merit-based scholarship for grades nine through 12. Eighth-graders who are interested in attending University Liggett School next year on a scholarship must submit application materials by January 17, 2020. Each year, the Liggett Merit Scholars program grants full-tuition and partial-tuition awards…
